Fort Myers Man Stabs Family Dog to Death

Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call for service from 1st Street on Wednesday, January 8, at approximately 6:10 pm.  The caller reported an incident of aggravated animal abuse.

Upon arrival, deputies located a deceased, 7-year-old mixed breed dog.  The dog, “Sky” had a stab wound to the throat.

According to family members, the suspect, Jason Lopez, 36, was staying overnight in their home as his mother in New Jersey was no longer able to deal with his serious drug addiction.

The suspect’s stepmother stated that Lopez began making threats to kill the dog and other family members during the late afternoon hours on Wednesday.  She contacted her husband and asked to be removed from the home.

The suspect’s father arrived home and drove his wife to a safe location.  Upon his return, he discovered the deceased dog.

Family members indicated that the dog was friendly and never showed signs of aggression.

Jason David Lopez (DOB 01-03-1984) was arrested and charged with Aggravated Animal Cruelty.

“In this county, if you abuse an animal…if you abuse anyone…you’re absolutely going to jail,” stated Sheriff Carmine Marceno.
