Over (30) thirty elementary and middle school children converged on the Target at Dynasty Drive in Fort Myers on Friday, December 20, 2019, to “Shop with a Cop.”
The Fort Myers Police Athletic League (PAL) launched its first annual holiday shopping spree with a group of deserving children and enthusiastic FMPD Officers. Each child got a $200 budget to choose gifts for themselves, family and friends.
The kids fanned out throughout the store getting help from Chief Derrick Diggs, Target employees and members of the police department.
The children were chosen to participate by their school resource officers, teachers and counselors and were picked up right after lunch, transported to the store and spent the next two hours filling their shopping carts.
The FMPD PAL program worked over the past couple of months to raise the money for the excursion through private and corporate donations. Some officers even gave extra donations if the budgets were exceeded a bit. The first event has been deemed a great success with preparations underway for next year.
