16-year-old PAL Boxer wins Gold

Members of the Fort Myers P.A.L. (Police Athletic League) Boxing Academy competed at the Junior Olympics Regional Tournament in South Carolina on May 18 and 19, 2019.  The team came back with one gold award and three silvers from the competition. 

Boxer Danilo Diez Jr., 16 years of age, won the Gold in his division and Is now the 2019 Junior Olympics Regional Champion. He will be traveling to the 2019 National Junior Olympics in Wisconsin on June 22 through 29, 2019. 

Silver medal winners were Nate Martinez and KeJuan Saez both 14 years of age and Terry Sanders 10 years of age.

The boxers train with the Fort Myers Police Athletic League under the supervision of coach Jose Ojeda who admires their dedication and hard work. “I want people to recognize them for their accomplishments, especially during this time that they’re taking finals in school and they’re trying to keep their good grades,” he said.

The Fort Myers PAL Team and coaches travel to regional and national events with the help of community sponsors and the PAL organization. FMPD Chief Derrick Diggs considers PAL an integral part of his Community Engagement Initiative, bringing sports programs to young children and teenagers to promote strong character and positive life skills.
