On Sunday, November 18, 2018, at approximately 4:55 pm, officers with the Fort Myers Police Department responded to 9822 Bernwood Place Drive. This was in reference to a male armed with a long gun shooting at vehicles.
Once on scene, officers spoke to several witnesses. They described a white male armed with a gun and shooting at a vehicle occupied by two males. Witnesses provided a description of the shooter to the officers on scene and identified the apartment he entered.
Officers quickly surrounded the apartment and made contact with shooter, Christopher Alcorn (DOB 06/20/78, of Fort Myers). Alcorn was taken into custody without incident. Three spent shell casings were recovered from the parking lot described by the witnesses where the shooting took place.
As officers were responding to the shots fired call at Bernwood Place Drive, a traffic accident was reported at the intersection of Colonial Boulevard and Winkler Avenue. Officers arrived at the crash and found two juvenile males in one of the vehicles involved in the accident. The males told the officers they had just been shot at and were on their way to the hospital.
Officers confirmed that one male victim was suffering from a facial injury consistent to that of shotgun blast. The second juvenile male occupant suffered minor injuries due to broken glass caused by the shooting. It was clear the vehicle was struck several times by gunfire.
Detectives with the Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Detectives learned that Mr. Alcorn’s juvenile son was involved in an altercation with the two victims at his school last week. Mr. Alcorn became involved in the ongoing dispute with the two victims and threatened them with violence should he encounter them. According to the victims, they drove to Bernwood Place to talk to Mr. Alcorn and resolve the issue.
Alcorn is being charged with one count of Attempted Murder and one count of Aggravated Battery.
