New book from SWFL expert sheds light on abusive relationships

Dr. Laura Streyffeler dispels stereotypes in ‘Wife Beater Shirt Optional’

Domestic violence isn’t always easily recognizable. Well-known Southwest Florida psychologist Dr. Laura Streyffeler, Ph.D., LMHC, uses real-life examples and frank discussions to pull readers into the minds and behaviors of both victims and abusers in her new book, “Wife Beater Shirt Optional: There is no dress code for domestic violence.”

Inspired by clients who didn’t understand they were being abused because there was no physical violence, Streyffeler shows domestic violence can also take the form of emotional, psychological or sexual abuse.

The public is invited to a launch party and book signing from 5:30-7 p.m. April 19 at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater at 1380 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.

“Wife Beater Shirt Optional,” available from AmazonBarnes & Noble and Balboa Press, gives insight into commonly asked questions like, “Why does she stay?” and, “He’s so big, why does he let her push him around?” Readers will be surprised at what they don’t know about domestic violence.

“I hope that victims and/or their friends and families will begin to recognize the signs of domestic violence before they escalate to a dangerous level and that abusers will see themselves and alter their behaviors before they get out of control,” Streyffeler says.

“I hope that clinical, legal and other human services professionals will come away with a better understanding of the significant trauma associated with domestic violence and treat the victims accordingly. And that the general public will stop blaming victims and victims will stop blaming themselves.”

Most importantly, she says, “Loving someone doesn’t mean having to accept unacceptable behaviors.”
