Valerie’s House celebrates FSU visits, the 100th child enrolled, grand opening of Naples & more…

Valerie’s House Opens in Naples!
On March 9, 2017, Valerie’s House opened its doors to dozens of children and their parents at its new Collier County satellite location. With the help of many volunteers, our staff, and the support of The Village School at North Naples Church,-our Naples Home- the night was a wonderful evening of sharing and getting to know each other. Some Naples families have been waiting for over a year for Valerie’s House to come to their community.  Now, the wait is over!

 Dear Friends,

Helping our area’s grieving families over this past year and a half has truly become a community effort. School counselors and nurses have helped spread the word about Valerie’s House, many therapists continue to volunteer their time with our children, and a strong Board of Directors is growing and helping us plan for the future.

The last few months have been a whirlwind of highs and lows. The highs are the result of amazing things like being honored as a finalist for the News-Press Person of the Year for 2016, and Valerie’s House being awarded a grant from the Naples Winter Wine Fest.  The lows are what we face when we get a call from a family, where Mom has died, and Dad doesn’t know where to turn. It is because we know Valerie’s House can help them, that we are motivated to keep moving forward with this life-changing work.  In this month’s newsletter you will meet one of our many volunteers who makes it happen.  You will also meet one of our children and see some of the great things our community is doing to help.

Thank you to everyone who is helping us become strong for years to come. Our pressing need right now remains raising money to find a house of our own.The FSU Alumni Club fixed up our rental house this month, and even though I’m a Gator, I have to say, I love them all as they kicked butt! If you are reading this and aren’t involved yet, but want to be, please email me directly.  We welcome your support.

Volunteer Spotlight
Volunteers are the heart beat of Valerie’s House. Without our dedicated volunteers we could never serve as many children as we do. It is their kindness, warm hearts and generosity that make our groups such a special place. Diane Bova has been a volunteer with us since August and has given our children both her time and talents. Diane is a buddy in group on Wednesday’s twice a month and often treats the families to her delicious home cooking during the potluck dinner. We are so grateful to have Diane on our team. Thank you!

“I love seeing the kids come through the door smiling and happy to be here- no matter how hard of a day they’ve had they know we love them & are here to help them get through their loss.” – Diane

Meet Gerardo!
Valerie’s House groups serve children as young as five years old. Meet our newest ‘little,’ Gerardo. His mom died in a car accident and he comes to group with his grandmother.
When asked what his favorite part of Valerie’s House is, he said”I love the Chocolate Meditation.” This mindfulness activity is the way we end all of our grief groups, as an opportunity to center the children and end the session with positive thoughts.
